How to print a QR code that scans

Choose SVG, PNG or PDF, preserve the QR quiet zone, and test size, contrast and scan distance before printing menus, cards or event signage.

Choose the right file

SVG keeps the code sharp when resized in a compatible design tool. PNG works well when exported at enough pixels for the final print. The PDF option creates an A4 or A6 print card. Keep the code square; stretching one side distorts the grid.

Protect the clear space

Leave an empty quiet zone around all four sides. The QR Code specification calls for four modules of clear space, where a module is one grid cell. Do not crop that border or put text, textures or a logo over it. Keep any text on your print layout outside the QR square.

Size depends on the actual design

There is no single size that guarantees every code scans. Dense payloads, fine dots, logos, printer quality and longer scanning distances can require larger prints. Shorten the destination URL when possible, use a clear background and inspect the printed dots for smudging or gaps.

Test the final object

Print one sample at its intended size. Scan it with multiple phones, under the lighting and from the distance visitors will use. Try it through any protective sleeve or glossy finish. A successful software decode is useful, but it cannot reproduce reflections, folds or a dim restaurant.
